It was just before Christmas that I saw a MasterPiece Gallery doll on ebay that caught my eye. A “Chantal” doll, by the German artist Monika Levenig. The husband gave me permission to buy, and this doll was my Christmas present.

C’était un peu avant Noël que j’ai découvert les grandes poupées de Masterpiece Gallery, et que j’ai vu une “Chantal” de Monika Levenig sur ebay. Mon mari m’a donné la permission de l’acheter, et cette poupée était donc mon cadeau de Noël 2018.

She’s 92cm tall, and came wearing her original outfit (as in photo) with her certificate, proving that she is number 11 of a limited edition of 350 of the 2008 Europe Edition.

Elle mesure 92cm et est venue dans sa tenue d’origine, avec son certificat d’authenticité, qui prouve qu’elle est numéro 11 d’une édition limitée à 350 pour l’Europe Edition 2008.

She’s a blond-haired, blue-eyed vinyl doll, with vinyl upper torso and fabric & stuffed lower body & thighs. At 92cm she is the size of a 2 – 3 year old child.

Elle est blonde, aux yeux bleus, en vinyle mais avec une partie du corps en tissu. A 92cm elle fait la taille d’un enfant de 2 à 3 ans.

One of the reasons I fell in love with the idea of adding a Masterpiece Gallery doll to my collection was to have a child-sized model for crafting projects. Readers of my crafting blog have already seen photos of Daisy, when I knitted a little bolero cardigan (pattern is “Rue’ by Martin Storey, for Rowan).

D’ailleurs, c’est sa grande taille qui m’a attirée. Les personnes qui suivent mon blog de loisirs créatifs ont déjà vu des photos de Daisy . . . lorsque j’ai tricoté un petit gilet (patron: “Rue” de Martin Storey pour Rowan).

More crafting projects are in the pipeline for Daisy, but in the meantime . . . I couldn’t resist buying her a little outfit in Lidl the other day, and then taking her outside in the garden for a few photos.

Il y aura d’autres projets couture/tricot à venir, mais l’autre jour j’ai craqué pour un petit ensemble à Lidl . . . et n’ai pas pu résister à l’envie de l’amener dans le jardin pour quelques photos.

There are several other artists, apart from Monika Levenig, who design life-sized child dolls for the Masterpiece Gallery collection. They range from approx 55cm (babies) through 68cm, 72cm, etc . . . with the largest representing children approximately 6 years old and measuring 114cm. The artists to look for, in case you want to google or do a search on ebay, are names like Monika Peter-Leicht, Denise McMillan, Doris Stannat, Monika Geddes and Susan Lippl, to name just a few.

Il y a d’autres artistes, en dehors de Monika Levening, qui créent des grandes poupées pour Masterpiece Gallery. Les poupées peuvent aller de 55cm (des bébés) à 68cm, 72cm etc . . . les plus grandes pouvant mesurer 114cm et representant des enfants de 6 ans. D’autres artistes , au cas où vous avez envie de faire des recherches sont, par exemple, Monika Peter-Leicht, Denise McMillan, Doris Stannat, Monika Geddes et Susan Lippl.

Noah – Berenguer newborn (Berenguer nouveau né)

Today I want to introduce you to little Noah, who is the first vinyl baby in my collection. He’s a Berenguer newborn that I bought second hand (13€ including p&p). Berenguer is a Spanish doll manufacturer who specialise in very life-like baby dolls, destined as toys for children. However, they are quite realistic and often used, as a cheaper option, for “reborning”. If you’re curious, you can see a variety of new Berenguer dolls here: Born to be kids. And if you want to see what “reborning” is all about, I suggest you visit cocochello, who does the most amazing work.

Aujourd’hui je vous montre Noah, le premier poupon en vinyle de la collection. C’est un poupon Berenguer nouveau-né, que j’ai acheté d’occas (pour 13€ FDPC). Berenguer est un fabriquant de poupée espagnol, leurs poupées étant déstinées aux enfants, comme jouet. Cependant, le poupon Berenguer est assez recherché dans le monde du “reborning” comme option un peu moins cher que les kits spécialisés. Je vous invite à visiter Born to be kids (boutique en France) pour voir la séléction de poupées Berenguer, et aussi d’admirer le travail de cocochello qui, elle, fait du vrai “reborning”.

When I bought this doll, he came in his original outfit, and measured approximately 36cm. Quand je l’ai acheté, ce poupon mesurait environ 36cm, était entièrement en vinyle, et avait ses vêtements d’origine.

It took me a while to build up the courage to do what I planned to do when buying him. That’s to say, taking him apart, discarding the vinyl body, and making a new cloth body. I actually ended up making 2 bodies, using a pattern by Ragdoll Fairy. For the first body, I followed pattern for a finished 16” doll (40cm) but I wasn’t happy. I therefore made a second body, following pattern for a 17” finished doll (43cm). I used brown cotton fabric, to keep it as close as possible to doll’s skin colour.

Il m’a fallu un certain temps pour prendre mon courage à deux mains, le désassembler, et à confectionner un corps en tissu. En fait, j’en ai fait deux, car le premier corps était un peu trop petit à mon goût. Le patron est par Ragdoll Fairy, et j’ai utilisé un coton couleur chocolat pour rester au plus près de la couleur des membres.

Little Noah therefore grew from 36cm to around 43cm, but it’s a bit difficult to tell because of bent legs. I weighted head, limbs and body, so he weighs in at just over 1.5 kilos. And he’s big enough to wear size 0-1 month baby clothes.

Avec son nouveau corps, le petit Noah est passé de 36cm à 43cm . . . et après lestage de la tête, membres et corps, son poids est environ 1,5 kg. Il est assez grand pour pouvoir être habillé en taille naissance-1 mois.

What I love about this Berenguer doll, is the way his eyes actually seem to be looking & focusing on things. In the right light, I think Noah looks very realistic.

Ce que j’adore avec ce poupon Berenguer, c’est qu’il semble vraiment regarder autour de lui et fixer des objets. Avec la bonne luminosité, Noah a l’air d’un vrai bébé.

modern kokeshi

I previously showed you photos of my vintage kokeshi collection . . . today I share photos of “modern” kokeshi. The following were all bought, new, in Japan, between 1999 and 2001.

Je vous ai montré ma collection de kokeshi vintage . . . aujourd’hui je vous montre celles achetées neuves au Japon, entre 1999 et 2001.

This first trio aren’t officially mine. The husband bought them for our daughter, during his first solo visits to Japan, but they’re on display in the glass cabinet with my other dolls, until the daughter tells me she wants them back.

Cette première trio appartient, en fait à ma fille. Mon mari a fait plusieurs voyages au Japon en solo, avant notre année en famille, et il a ramené à chaque fois, une kokeshi pour sa fille. Je les expose en vitrine avec ma collection, mais ma fille sait où elles sont.

Un autre joli trio (et sans doute au moins une kokeshi de plus à ma fille).

These are definitely mine because I can remember what attracted me to each. The first, because of the gorgeous contrast of colours on the kimono and the elegant proportion between hair & body. The second because she is a traditional shape, but painted in a very creative style. And the third – more egg shaped than kokeshi doll – to add some variety to my collection.

Ces trois là, je me rappelle les avoir choisi parmi les centaines de kokeshi dans les magasins. La première à cause du rouge des fleurs de son kimono, et les proportions entre cheveux & corps. La deuxième, parce qu’elle a une forme de kokeshi traditionnelle, mais peinte dans des couleurs vives, qui en font une kokeshi moderne. Et la troisième, plutôt en forme d’oeuf . . . parce qu’elle rigole, et qu’un peu de variété dans une collection, ça fait du bien.

However my favourite modern kokeshi are the following.

Par contre, j’ai gardé mes préférées pour la fin.

The elderly couple, rather stooped, with white hair which (to me) denotes how wisdom comes with age, but the discreet crows’ feet around the eyes are proof that this couple enjoyed life to the full. On the left, two traditional kokeshi, but bought newly made, not vintage.

A droite, un couple de vieux, le dos courbé d’âge, et les cheveux blancs qui (pour moi) est un signe extérieur de sagesse . . . avec des rides discrètes autour des yeux, qui montrent que ce vieux couple à aimé la vie. A gauche, deux kokeshi traditionnelles mais achetées neuves.

ty beanie kids

It was in the late 80s that H. Ty Warner set up his own company, Ty Inc. and started producing stuffed animals aimed at young children. They were “Beanie Babies” and very quickly became popular with both children and adults. Ty toys are still going strong today, over 30 years later, but I’ll admit to preferring the earlier toys.

C’était vers la fin des années 80s que H. Ty Warner a fondé sa compagnie, Ty Inc. et a commencé à fabriquer des animaux en peluche destinés aux enfants. Les premiers furent les “Beanie Babies” et ont séduit adultes comme enfants. On trouve des peluches Ty partout encore aujourd’hui, plus de 30 ans plus tard, mais je dois dire que je préfère ceux d’avant.

I, and my three children, became interested in beanies when we were living in Tokyo, 2000 – 2001. And 2000 just happens to be the year when “Beanie Kids” were introduced to the ever growing range of ty toys (which up until then had been animals and lots of different bears.

Je me suis mise (ainsi que mes 3 enfants) à collectionner les ty beanies lorsque nous vivions à Tokyo, 2000 – 2001. Il se trouve que 2000 fut l’année des “Beanie Kids”.

In the beginning, there were 9, issued on January 8th 2000 . . . followed by 4 more on June 24th the same year. More kids followed these but my collection of Beanie Kids stopped with the original gang of 13.

Au début, il y en avait 9, sortis le 8 janvier 2000 . . . suivi d’encore 4 le 24 juin de la même année. D’autres ont suivi, mais ma collection de Beanie Kids s’arrête avec les 13 premiers.

Each kid came with the heart shaped ty tag, where details of date of birth and a little poem are printed. The girl beanies have colourful dresses and white knickers (apart from Calypso who is wearing trousers & top), while the boys just have a pair of shorts.

Chaque “kid” est venu avec son étiquette rouge en forme de coeur où figure sa date de naissance et un petit poème. Les filles ont une petite culotte blanche ainsi qu’une jolie robe (à part Calypso qui est en pantalon) et les garçons ont juste un short.

One cute detail they all have in common: a belly button lol.

Un détail qu’ils ont tous en commun: un nombril mdr.

“Curly” and “Cutie” are my personal favourites because of their hair.

“Curly” et “Cutie” sont mes préférées à cause de leur cheveux.

the beginning/ le commencement

My doll collecting days began in the year 2000, during a year in Tokyo, with a collection of vintage kokeshi dolls, bought at a flea market.

Ma collection de poupée a commencé en l’an 2000, pendant une année passée à Tokyo, avec des kokeshi achetées au marché au puce.

The kokeshi doll, once seen, is never forgotten. Traditional kokeshi being little more than a round head on a cylindrical body, made from wood, and painted . . . at a first glance they ressemble skittles, but they were, in fact, destined as dolls, before later becoming a collectible item.

La kokeshi a une forme très particulière, plus comme une quille qu’une poupée, en bois, avec une tête sur un corps cylindrique. Au début un jouet pour enfant, la kokeshi est maintenant un objet de décoration/collection.

Kokeshi originate from the Tohoku region of Japan. They are hand-crafted by “koujin” on a lathe, and were originally made to sell to the Japanese farmers & workers who came to the hot springs (onsen) in the Tohoku region, buying a kokeshi as a souvenir or as present for a child back home during the Meiji era (1868 – 1912). There are two groups of kokeshi: traditional and modern. The traditional kokeshi can be divided into 11 types: Hijiori, Kijiyama, Nanbu, Naruko, Sakunami, Togatta, Tsuchiyu, Tsugaru, Yajiro, Yamagata & Zao. Each type derives from a different area of the Tohoku, and styles differ from area to area. However, each craftsman must respect the characteristics of his area.

La kokeshi vient de la région du Tohoku, au Japon. Elles sont fabriquées par ‘koujiin” sur une tour, au départ, pour les travailleurs et fermiers qui venaient visiter les sources chaudes (onsen) de Tohoku, et qui voulaient acheter un souvenir pour ramener à la maison pour leurs enfants pendant l’ère Meiji (1868-1912). Il y a deux sortes de kokeshi: traditionnelle et moderne. Et il y a 11 types de kokeshi (selon l’endroit où elle est fabriquée): Hijiori, Kijiyama, Nanbu, Naruko, Sakunami, Togatta, Tsuchiyu, Tsugaru, Yajiro, Yamagata & Zao. Chaque artisan doit respecter les caractéristiques de sa région.

The art of kokeshi making is a craft which is passed down from generation to generation, from master to apprentice.

L’art de fabriquer des kokeshi se transmet de génération en génération, du maitre à l’apprenti.

Anyway . . . my collection began with some vintage, traditional, kokeshi. Maintenant place à quelques photos de ma collection.

As far as I know, these all date back to between 1953 to 1955 (28-30 of the Showa era). Some are signed and dated, others aren’t.

D’après ce que je sais, les kokeshi de ma collection datent d’entre 1953 et 1955 (28 – 30 de l’ère Showa). Certaines sont datées et signées, d’autres non.

The largest two in my collection/ les deux plus grandes de ma collection.

are (I think) a Togatta on the left, and a Naruko on the right. They measure 25cm and 21.5cm.

(je crois) une Togatta à gauche et une Naruko à droite. Elles mesurent 25cm et 21.5cm.

From what I have read, kokeshi generally represent a Japanese girl, however many of the dolls in my collection were found as couples: a boy & girl doll.

D’après ce que j’ai lu, la kokeshi représente, en général, une fille. Pourtant, la plupart des mes kokeshi sont par deux: garçon et fille.

The above kokeshi, all with wobbling turning heads, varying in height from 15cm – 8cm.

Ci-dessus, des kokeshi avec la tête qui dandine et qui tourne. Elles mesurent entre 15cm – 8cm.

Several of my dolls were marked by their previous owner – obviously to remember where and when the kokeshi were bought.

Plusieurs sont marquées par leur précédent propriétaire, sans doute pour se rappeler où et quand.

And this last photo, to show the tinest kokeshi in my collection, measuring just 2cm in height.

a new space to showcase my dolls / un nouvel espace pour ma collection de poupées

After more than 10 years on WP, blogging & sharing about crafting, adding new categories over the years which include: cross stitch, patchwork, clothes making, crochet & knitting . . . I’m also now back into my doll collection. Not many of my crafting followers seem to share my passion for dolls, so in order not to inundate my crafting blogs with doll-themed articles & photos . . . the sensible solution is to start a new blog.

Après plus de 10 ans sur WordPress, où je partage ma passion pour les loisirs créatifs, allant du point de croix, au patchwork, à la couture, au crochet & tricot . . . je me plonge à nouveau dans ma collection de poupée. Cette passion n’est pas forcément partagée par les lecteurs de mes premiers blogs, alors j’ai décidé d’ouvrir un nouveau blog, pour y mettre mes photos de poupées.

I don’t expect to get many visitors here, but if you do happen to visit please feel free to browse and perhaps leave a comment. I’ll be using this space more as a photo gallery of my doll collection which began, by chance, almost 20 years ago, and has grown to encompas many varieties of dolls. I have vintage Kokeshi dolls; Russian nesting dolls; TY beanie kids; resin BJDs in various sizes; a small family of Hujoo dolls; and a few vinyl dolls have joined my collection more recently.

Je ne m’attend pas à avoir beaucoup de visites ici, mais si jamais vous passez par là, je vous souhaite la bienvenue. Il y aura surtout des photos de ma collection, qui a commencée, par hasard, il y a une vingtaine d’année. Depuis, elle s’est étendue à une variété de styles/matières. Il y a des poupées en bois (Kokeshis et Matriochka); des poupées en peluche (des TY beanie kids); des BJDs en résine; une petite collection de Hujoo; et plus récemment, des poupées en vinyle.

I’m raring to go with this new venture: playing with my dolls and taking lots of photos. Hopefully also doing some clothes making too.So, until next time . . . here are a few photos to show you complete extremes in my collection.

J’ai hâte de me lancer dans ce nouveau blog: jouer avec mes poupées, les prendre en photo, et avec un peu de chance, faire de la couture aussi. En attendant voici quelques photos pour vous montrer les deux extrêmes de ma collection.

La plus grande, c’est une poupée “Chantal” de Monkia Levening, qui mesure environ 90cm. Et les plus petites . . . un couple de kokeshi en bois, qui mesure à peine 2cm.
